Lucian, guardian of the Underworld Gates, slips out of the realm of the dead with his daughter Mila and heads to Vesper, hoping for a quiet mortal life. Mila carries the power of the River Styx, but their attempt at normalcy is interrupted when Lucian rescues Valerie, the hunted Ashford heiress, on the street. Faced with an arranged marriage, Valerie offers a contract marriage instead, and the pair marry.
Their fragile peace quickly unravels. Adrian Hawthorne's family comes after Valerie, kidnapping her and sending Underworld envoys to kill. Mila repeatedly steps in with inhuman strength to shield her mother, while Lucian erases the memories left behind. When Mila hacks the enemy's bug, cousin Gavin's scheme to forge drug evidence and frame Valerie is exposed. Father and daughter bring the conspiracy down at the family council, but Adrian soon returns with gunmen to seize the docks. And with Charon sending Ronan into the mortal world, threats keep rising from the Underworld and the mob.
